ADHD Medication
What are the medications available against this psychological disease that generally changes how a child behaves, thinks, and feels? *)
There are mainly two types of treatment that are generally used to cure ADHD; pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
Various studies show that 70% to 80% of ADHD children benefit by stimulant drugs. In ADHD, normally the psycho stimulants drugs are used; they are prescribed for both children and adults with severe ADHD, but the dose of the psycho stimulants is different.
The psycho stimulant drug that is generally used is Ritalin. Some non-stimulant drugs are also used, as well as amphetamines, such as Dexedrine and Adderall.
Your doctor can advise a daily dosage which can be short or long acting. After this initial dosage your doctor may feel a need to increase or reduce the dosage for the drug to give you the desired effect.
Side effects which generally occur due to this medication
These medications have some adverse effects in children, though. The most common side effect of these medications is change in appetite, sleeplessness and anxiousness.
Younger children may also loose some weight from these therapies.
Other side effects of these psycho stimulants drugs include irritability, stomach pain, hair loss, headache, depression, hallucinations, and lack of spontaneity.
*) Sidenote: nearly all children suffering from this disease are overactive and lack concentration at times. Infants are extremely restless and crying, and show very poor sleep patterns.
ADHD affected babies are also difficult to feed, frequent irritability, head banging and often rocking their bed.
Older children have poor concentration in their study, have a week memory, and are very impulsive. They are in a hurry to do everything, generally lack self prestige, and frequently suffer from some abnormal sleep and appetite problems.
